\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nSurah \r\n al-Ma'arij (The Ways of Ascension)
\r\n
\r\n Chapter 70: Verses 19-25"Indeed, \r\n man was created impatient.
\r\n
\r\n Irritable when evil touches him, and stingy when good \r\n reaches him.
\r\n Except those devoted to prayer (salah), those who \r\n remain ever constant in their prayer. And those in whose \r\n wealth there is a known right for the beggar who asks \r\n (sa'il)
\r\n and for the unlucky who is in need (mahroom)."Commentary
\r\nHuman \r\n Nature
\r\nIt is human nature, or \r\n his natural weakness, to be in a state of impatience and \r\n hasty unease. Here, one should keep in view that at \r\n many places in the Quran, after mentioning humanity's \r\n common moral weaknesses, the true believers and the righteous \r\n have been made the exception. The same theme is being \r\n expressed in these verses.
\r\nThis explains \r\n the fact that these 'hereditary weaknesses' are within \r\n our power to change. If individuals accept the role \r\n of God's guidance in their lives, ponder over their purpose \r\n of creation, and strive to reform themselves practically \r\n and sincerely, they can remove such immoral qualities. \r\n
\r\nOn the other hand, if \r\n a person believes he or she is living on this earth "just \r\n to make the most [fun] out of it" and to "achieve \r\n all happiness and experience all pleasures" since \r\n "life is short", then traits such as selfishness, \r\n egotism, indecency, sexual perversions, material obsessions, \r\n and arrogance become ingrained in one's personality.
\r\nIt \r\n is only throught patience (sabr) and steadfastness \r\n (istiqamah) in face of temptation and strife that \r\n believers and righteous custodians of this earth are able \r\n to look beyond their personal desires and interests and \r\n bring inner peace, social justice, mutual love and harmony.
\r\nWho \r\n are these Steadfast, Disciplined, and Selfless People?
\r\nThe following are the two \r\n traits of those who do not panic and become ungrateful \r\n to Allah when hardship strikes them or become stingy when \r\n they have "enough in life":
\r\n1- That no laziness, no \r\n love of ease and comfort, no occupation or interest hinders \r\n them from being punctual and regular in Salah. \r\n When the time of daily prayers comes, they leave their \r\n work or activity and stand up to worship with peace of \r\n mind and comfort, thereby reconnecting themselves with \r\n their Lord - the Source of all peace, contentment, and \r\n help!
\r\nThose \r\n who wish to lead productive, disciplined and meaningful \r\n lives know the practical benefits and wisdom in the divine \r\n institution of Salah. They see its positive \r\n effects in their own lives: the punctuality it \r\n instills, the discipline it requires, the physical \r\n and spiritual purity it develops, and the refuge \r\n and protection it provides from the haram \r\n activities and inclinations in and around us. Imam Abu \r\n Hamid al-Ghazali (rahimahullah) used to say, "If \r\n you wish to fight laziness and procrastination, then begin \r\n by praying the five daily Salah on time."
\r\n2- In addition to their attachment \r\n and yearning for Prayer, these \r\n people are cognisant of the due right of others in their \r\n wealth and earnings. They provide for those in need whether \r\n they are asked or not. The word Sai'l in \r\n the verse refers not only to a beggar on the street, but \r\n any needy person who asks for help. And Mahroom, \r\n literally the one deprived, implies a person who is unemployeed, \r\n or the one who tries to earn a living but can not earn \r\n enough to supprt his or his family's needs due to various \r\n circumstances.
\r\nIn fact, as soon as it becomes \r\n known to a God-fearing Muslim that a person is in need \r\n - whether personal or material, regardless of faith, race, \r\n or culture - he does not wait for the needy person \r\n to ask or beg, but willing reaches out and offers his \r\n or her help. This is the way of our great Prophet \r\n Muhammad (sall Allahu 'alayhi wa sallam) and the \r\n generations after him.

\r\n Prophetic \r\n Guidance \r\n |
:!: \r\n The Free Slaves :!:
\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nThe Prophet Muhammad strongly encouraged and \r\n actively solicited the freeing of slaves and declared it one of \r\n the greatest deeds of righteousness in Islam. His Companions, \r\n such as Sayyidna Abu Bakr (radhi Allahu 'anh) and others \r\n who had the financial means, would personally free the weakest \r\n and most persecuted among the slaves from the bondage of Makkan \r\n tribal leaders, using their own wealths and possessions. The emancipation \r\n of slaves is not only a 'good deed' in Islam, but indeed required \r\n as an expiation for many of the severe sins where slavery exists.
\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nAlthough slavery existed in the world before the \r\n advent of Islam in Arabia, and lingered on as a cultural practice, \r\n in Muslim societies it never degraded into an organized state-sponsored \r\n practice of racial oppression, exploitation of minorities and \r\n foreigners, or the subjugation and humiliation of an entire conquered \r\n people for the purposes of 'cheap labour' as was the case \r\n with Europeans and its 'Christian' colonialists.
\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nThis was mainly due to Islam's \r\n unequivocal declaration of the infinite value of all human life \r\n [the death of single Muslim is worse than the destruction \r\n of the holy Ka'abah and no human life is violable without \r\n just cause], the divine honour bestowed \r\n to all humans [humans \r\n are God's representatives on earth and its guardians], their \r\n equality before God as His slaves [no soul is superior \r\n to another except in righteousness] and their inalienable \r\n rights to safety, dignity, honour and freedom.
\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n"Your slaves are \r\n your brethren upon whom Allah has given you authority. So, if \r\n one has one's brethren under one's control, one should feed them \r\n with the like of what one eats and clothe them with the like of \r\n what one wears. You should not overburden them with what they \r\n cannot bear, and if you do so, then help them (in their hard job)." \r\n [Bukhari]
\r\n
\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nThis is the road to true social, mental and \r\n psychological emancipation of slaves: the recognition of their \r\n full humanity and divine entitlement to rights, the restoration \r\n of their honour, dignity and participation in society after freedom, \r\n the opportunity for them to free themselves in absence of other \r\n avenues, their education and unhindered, undiscriminated assimilation \r\n into the 'free' community, and their just and fair treatment by \r\n individuals not just in words and deeds, but perceptions and attitudes. \r\n An "Emancipation Proclamation" is only as good as its \r\n actual manifestation in the hearts, minds, feelings, and attitudes \r\n of people and society. Islamic history is filled with examples \r\n of how the 'slaves of Islam' became the 'leaders of humanity': \r\n from the lone Sayyidna Bilal (radhi Allahu 'anh) to the \r\n unmatched scholarship, learning and leadership of the African \r\n 'ulema who at one point in time outnumbered those of Arab \r\n origin!
\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\n\r\nThe Prophet declared on many occasions: \r\n "Whoever frees a Muslim slave, Allah will save all the parts \r\n of his body from the Fire as he has freed the body-parts of the \r\n slave!" [Bukhari] Many other narrations make \r\n no distinction between a Muslim or a non-Muslim slave.\r\n

\r\nThis 49th \r\n chapter of the Quran provides excellent guidance on the kind of \r\n behavior that Muslims should avoid to establish Muslim unity. \r\n For instance, Allah, advises us to avoid mockery, defamation and \r\n suspicion. These are all things which serve to divide us and create \r\n hatred, hurt and dissension.
\r\nDiscuss \r\n the themes of Surah Hujurat relating to Muslim behavior in family \r\n meetings, study circles and classes for young and old Muslims, \r\n Khutbas, talks, etc. in your community to share this Divine \r\n wisdom with all.
\r\nWhenever you recall that you have \r\n done Gheebah (backbitten someone) against a Muslim or non-Muslim, \r\n you should remember that you need to seek that person's forgiveness. \r\n Doing this is a prerequisite to washing off that sin.
