Surah al-Baqarah (The \r\n Cow)
\r\n Chapter 2: Verse 183

\r\n
\r\n

\"O \r\n Believers, Fasting (sawm) has been prescribed for you as \r\n it was prescribed for those before you, so that you may attain \r\n Taqwa (God-consciousness)\"

\r\n

Commentary:

\r\n

The verse establishes that fasting \r\n had been made obligatory for all believers, past, present and \r\n future, and that the aim behind it is to open their hearts to \r\n God and make them more conscious and fearful of Him. Therefore, \r\n the principal objective of fasting is to attain and refine this \r\n quality of Taqwa. Fasting, when observed in obedience to \r\n God, and in pursuit of His pleasure, instils and revives Taqwa \r\n in the human heart.

\r\n

What is Taqwa?

\r\n

Talq ibn Habeeb (d.100 AH), may Allah \r\n have mercy on his soul, said: \"When Fitnah \r\n (trials and tribulations) appear then extinguish it with Taqwa!\" \r\n

\r\n

When he was asked as to what Taqwa \r\n was, he replied: \"Taqwa is to \r\n act in obedience to Allah, upon a light (of faith) from Allah, \r\n hoping in the Mercy of Allah. And Taqwa is leaving the \r\n acts of disobedience to Allah, upon a light from Allah, due to \r\n the fear of Allah.\"

\r\n

This is one of the best definitions \r\n of Taqwa. For every action must have both a starting point \r\n and a goal. And an action will not be considered as an act \r\n of obedience, or nearness to Allah, unless it starts from pure \r\n Iman (faith in Allah). Thus it is pure Faith – and \r\n not habits, desires, nor seeking praise or fame, nor its like \r\n – that should be what initiates the action. And the [goal of \r\n the] action should be to earn the reward of Allah and to seek \r\n His good pleasure.

\r\n

Fasting is \r\n only Natural for a Nation of Struggle

\r\n

For the Ummah (world-community) \r\n of Islam, whose duty is to undertake a campaign of struggle (Jihad), \r\n as a means of establishing God's universal order of mercy, peace, \r\n and justice, and who is to stand witness to the rest of mankind, \r\n it is only natural that fasting should be made obligatory. Fasting \r\n is a means of testing a person's determination and will-power, \r\n and an important aspect of his or her relationship with God. It \r\n is a discipline that teaches one how to rise above his or her \r\n physical needs and overcome the pressure of temptation in order \r\n to earn God's blessings and reward.

Do \r\n Not Hate...

\r\n
\r\n

\"Do not hate the sinners, \r\n only their sins. Do not aid Satan in his task by damning \r\n the sinners. Instead, help them fight Satan by praying \r\n that they be guided to the Straight Path and obtain their \r\n deliverance. Be watchful for your own sins, keep reciting \r\n the Quranic verse: 'Do you not love that Allah should \r\n forgive you?' [24:22] \r\n and try to understand the meaning of the verse: \r\n 'And the human has been created \r\n weak' [4:28]. Realize that everyone's life \r\n is full of both good and evil and that every group is \r\n composed of both the good and the bad. This realisation \r\n will make it easier for you to deal with the sinners around \r\n you in the manner that Allah and His Prophet, blessings \r\n and peace be upon him, have desired.

\r\n

\"When it comes to shortcomings \r\n and sins, give others a greater allowance than you would \r\n give yourselves. Consider others more worthy of being \r\n pardoned than you. Be less harsh to others than you are \r\n on your own self. Be less demanding of others than you \r\n are of yourself. If Allah wills, you shall find much good \r\n in such conduct.\"

11- Not \r\n feeling angry when the limits and laws set by Allah are violated, \r\n because the flame of zeal has been extinguished in the person's \r\n heart. They no longer take action to stop evil, or enjoin \r\n evildoers to do good, or denounce wrongdoing. They never get \r\n angry for the sake of Allah. The Messenger of Allah (sall \r\n Allahu 'alayhi wa sallam) described this heart ravaged \r\n by weakness in the saying: \"The heart \r\n will be subjected to trial after trial, and there will appear \r\n a black stain on any heart that is affected, which will spread \r\n until the heart is completely black and sealed, as it were, \r\n so that it will not recognize any good deed or denounce any \r\n evil, except whatever suits its own desires.\" [Reported \r\n by Muslim #144]

Love of \r\n good and hatred of evil have disappeared from a heart like this; \r\n all things are equal to such a person, and he has no motive \r\n to enjoin good or forbid evil. He may hear of some evil \r\n that is being done on earth, and may accept it; in this case \r\n he carries the same burden of sin as one who witnesses evil \r\n with his or her own eyes and approves of it, as the Prophet \r\n (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: \"If sin is committed on earth, the one who witnesses it \r\n and hates it will be like one who knew nothing of it. Whoever \r\n does not witness it but approves of it will be like one who \r\n witnesses it!\" [Reported by Abu Dawood, #4345] This \r\n approval, which is an action of the heart, makes him like one \r\n who witnessed the sin.

HOW \r\n ISLAM REVOLUTIONIZED THE WORLD
\r\n
\r\n
\r\n
\r\n

Why is it that makes \r\n Muslims believe that Islam is a tremendous bounty and \r\n a gift from God, when the rest of the world views ALL \r\n religions as a burden on mankind created by backward \r\n cultures?

\r\n

Islam is the faith that defines us, \r\n defines who we are, defines our identity. In fact anyone \r\n who truly understand's Islam will be well aware of it's \r\n simplicity, elegance and the power to lead man for what \r\n Muslims believe is mans true purpose. Why is there nothing \r\n like Islam on earth? Why is Islam so revolutionary?

It \r\n is Islam that has taught human beings that the Lord \r\n their God is One and Only. That He has no partners, \r\n no wife, and no son, and that there can be no compromise \r\n on the unity of God.

It \r\n is Islam that has taught human beings that they are \r\n all equal and that no Arab is superior to non-Arab, \r\n nor a non-Arab is superior to an Arab and that the \r\n best of all of us is the one who is most righteous. \r\n

It \r\n is Islam that has taught human beings that they are \r\n all brothers and sisters created from a single pair \r\n of a male and a female. Therefore, Islam , unlike \r\n Hinduism, neither recognizes nor condones the idea \r\n of a caste system. Islam is a war on caste systems, \r\n on aristocracies, and hereditary social groups of \r\n all kinds.

It \r\n is Islam that has taught humanity the value of the \r\n intellect, the importance of reflection, and the role \r\n of the mind in attaining faith. Christians teach that \r\n one can never become a believer except when the Holy \r\n Spirit mysteriously occupies one's heart. Islam teaches \r\n that faith is the fruit of reason and it is through \r\n continuous reflection on the wonders of creation that \r\n faith can be obtained, maintained, and nurtured. \r\n
