The Declining Day (103)

\r\n

In the name of Allah, \r\n the Beneficent, the Merciful!

\"I swear by the \r\n declining day, that man is a certain loser, save \r\n those who have faith and do righteous deeds and \r\n counsel one another to follow the truth and counsel \r\n one another to be steadfast.\"

    This short surah of three \r\n verses outlines a complete system for human life \r\n based on the Islamic viewpoint. In a few words \r\n the whole Islamic constitution is covered and \r\n in fact, the nation of Islam is described in its \r\n essential qualities and its message. This is the \r\n eloquence of which Allah alone is capable!

    The great fact which this \r\n surah affirms is simply that throughout the history \r\n of man there has been one worthwhile and trustworthy \r\n path. All other paths lead only to loss and ruin. \r\n That path is first the adoption of faith, followed \r\n up with good deeds and exhortation to follow the \r\n truth and to steadfastness.

What does the adoption \r\n of faith signify?

    Faith is the great root of \r\n life from which goodness springs in its various \r\n forms and to which all its fruits are bound. What \r\n does not spring from faith is a branch cut from \r\n a tree: it is bound to fade and perish, it is \r\n indeed a devilish production, limited and impermanent!

    Faith is the axis to which \r\n all the fine fabric of life's network is connected. \r\n Without it life is a loose event, wasted through \r\n the pursuit of yearnings and fantasies. It is \r\n the ideology which collects diversified deeds \r\n under a consistent system, following the same \r\n route and geared to the same mechanism, possessing \r\n a definite motive and a predetermined goal.

Doing what is righteous \r\n is the natural fruit of faith 

\r\n

  • \r\n

    Spontaneous activity is generated \r\n at the same time as the reality of faith settles \r\n inside the human heart and mind. For faith is \r\n a positive and active concept which, once it has \r\n pervaded the human conscience, hastens to activate \r\n it to the outside world in good deeds. This is \r\n the Islamic view of faith. It must be dynamic. \r\n If it is not, then it is either phoney or non-existent!

    From this we recognise the \r\n values of faith: dynamism, activity, creativeness \r\n and productiveness devoted to Allah's pleasure \r\n and not narrowness, negativity or isolation into \r\n self. It is not just sincere and innocent intentions, \r\n that never develop into actions. This is the distinguishing \r\n characteristic of Islam that makes it a creative \r\n power in practical life.

Counseling one another \r\n to follow the truth and to steadfastness

\r\n

  • \r\n

    This reveals a picture of \r\n Islamic society which has a unique inter-relationship \r\n between its individual members. It realises the \r\n essence of its faith and what it has to do of \r\n good deeds which include, among other tasks, the \r\n leadership of humanity along its own path. To \r\n execute this tremendous duty, counseling and exhortation \r\n becomes a necessity since catering for right and \r\n equity are the hardest tasks ever to carry out.

    Exhortation to endurance \r\n and steadfastness widens the capacities by inspiring \r\n unity of aim and direction and the feeling of \r\n togetherness in everyone, equipping them with \r\n love, fortitude and determination. It generates \r\n vitality in the community where the truth of Islam \r\n can survive and through which it is implemented.

    This category includes \r\n a significant portion of western society and \r\n the majority of youth today. Da'wah traditionally \r\n meant inviting Jews, Christians, Hindus, and others \r\n to Islam i.e. those who at least believed in \r\n a God, in whatever shape or form. Nowadays \r\n however, Da'wah could also mean inviting \r\n faithless, secular minded individuals towards \r\n religion. The students of schools, universities, \r\n and colleges are the potential audience of this \r\n form of Da'wah, since this portion of the population \r\n represents the height of secularism or atheism \r\n in North America today! Often times, it's challenging \r\n enough to convince them of the virtues \r\n of religion in the first place, let alone \r\n calling them to Islam. Therefore, in order to \r\n establish a belief in the existence of God, \r\n before anything else, we should learn how to \r\n raise questions about the belief in God and \r\n the defects in the theory of evolution/materialism, \r\n through intellectual and educational discussions. \r\n It may not be very productive to give lectures \r\n on the concept of Tawheed (Oneness \r\n of God) and its different forms, if the person \r\n doesn't even think God actually exists!
