True Purpose of \r\n Quran
\r\n

    The \r\n Quran is not simply a book of laws--of dos and don'ts-- \r\n but it is foremost a book of Tarbiyya (improvement \r\n and training), or a book that develops and allows \r\n people to grow spiritually and morally.
    \r\n
  • \r\n
    That's why Allah describes the Quran in this verse as \"Mauidhah\", \r\n which involves \r\n warning the person about the consequences of his actions \r\n and it involves, as the English expression states, \r\n \"putting the fear of God in him\", as well as making \r\n his heart soft and submissive to the Truth.

    Hence, \r\n the Quran is a book that is meant to reform the individual, \r\n either changing him if he were void of guidance or \r\n improving him if he already was walking along the \r\n Straight Path. It brings him out of the death \r\n of Jahiliyya (Ignorance) to the life if Islam-- \r\n a message that imbibes in him the feeling of love, \r\n fear, and responsibility to Allah (Taqwa). \r\n

The Linguistic, \r\n Unique, Revolutionary Style of Quran

    It is \r\n interesting to note that after every law stated in \r\n the Quran, Allah closes the relevant verses with remembrance \r\n of Allah and promises of rewards for those who stay \r\n within His limts.

    The \r\n following four are the characteristics of the Quranic \r\n style that make it a revolutionary message for all \r\n those are Conscious of God:

    • \r\n
      The \r\n Quran presents what actually happens as if the \r\n reader is witnessing the event itself by exposing \r\n all the of the important aspects in a clear, vivid \r\n manner.
      \r\n
    • \r\n
      The \r\n Quran does not discuss essentially related matters \r\n in separate chapters like what one finds in science \r\n and philosophy books, but everything is tied together \r\n and presented as one unified, related whole.
      \r\n
    • \r\n
      At \r\n the same time, though, the Quran stresses various \r\n aspects of life in balance or proportion, as they \r\n deserve in Allah's sight
      \r\n
    • \r\n
      The \r\n Quran gives reality a life or breathing spirit \r\n that allows the Quran to influence the heart, \r\n soul, emotions, and intellect of the reader.

Message of Quran \r\n is Clear to the Open-minded and God-conscious

    There \r\n are many people who know the Truth but who, nevertheless, \r\n remain immersed in falsehood either because they yield \r\n to their own desires and temptations, or because they \r\n fear to share in the  hardship which the followers \r\n of Truth may have to endure.

DAWA - Time to Come Out \r\n of our Boxes!  
\r\n

    Let's \r\n move out of our \"boxes\" and \"loops\". It \r\n is quite unfortunate to see today \r\n Muslims spending a great portion of their \r\n lives and efforts on \"scholarly\" debates \r\n or disputes- which may not be a priority for \r\n Muslims in these times and in this land. It \r\n is quite hypocritical because there are thousands \r\n out there who are waiting for our counseling, \r\n our time, our advice (Nasiha), our \r\n support, and our message. Therefore, our objectives \r\n and efforts need to be re-prioritized. As Imam \r\n Khalid Griggs once said, \"Unfortunately, today, \r\n majority of the members of the \"Dawa\" organizations are \r\n usually doing Dawa to each other, across the \r\n table.\" It is now time to come out of this \"box\", \r\n and start interacting with the real society \r\n and think of creative and dynamic ways of projecting \r\n Islam to people. Dawa is about changing the \r\n lives of people before anything else! \r\n [To \r\n be continued in the next issue]

Modesty \r\n [Haya] in Islam and Manners of Dressing

Aurah \r\n of Males ~

\r\n
Besides \r\n the general instructions on dressing, Islam has also \r\n specified those parts of the body which the males and \r\n females must cover. Such a part, which is obligatory \r\n to cover, is termed as Aurah or Satr by \r\n the Islamic Law.
\r\n
 
\r\n
For \r\n the males, the Aurah is the part of the body \r\n between the navel and the knee, and it has been enjoined \r\n that one should neither uncover this part before another \r\n person, nor should one look at this part of anybody \r\n else:

    \"The \r\n male should cover that part of his body which is \r\n between the navel and the knee.\" (Related \r\n by Al-Mabsut).

    Ali \r\n (May Allah be pleased with him) reported that the \r\n Prophet (Peace and blessings be upon him) once said, \r\n \"Do not uncover your thigh before another person, \r\n nor look at the thigh of a living or a dead person.\" \r\n (Tafsir al-Kabir)

This is a general command which should be observed in all \r\n situations, except obviously in the presence of one's \r\n own wife, as the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, \"Guard \r\n your Aurah from all except your wives.....\" \r\n (Related in Al-Ahkam al-Quran, Vol. III, p. \r\n 37)

\r\n
[It \r\n should also be noted here the difference between the \r\n Aurah and the \"Hijab\" of men. Hijab \r\n is a general term that could be loosely used to \r\n describe the act of covering a part of one's body \r\n due of Haya (sense of modesty) and shame. So, \r\n even though the Aurah (which is the bare minimum) \r\n for men includes the portion between knee and navel, \r\n it is considered highly immoral and indecent for men \r\n go around on streets and in their homes with half their \r\n chest and legs exposed--- an issue which is \r\n quite clearly defined by the scholars of Islam based \r\n on the Life of the Prophet (peace be upon him), but \r\n one which is rarely addressed today.
\r\n
 
\r\n
Therefore, \r\n it is part of Haya and Hijab of \r\n men to cover their whole body as much as possible. It \r\n is important to note that there are several reasons/situations \r\n due to which or in which Islam has taken a lesser \r\n strict position on the covering of man's body. One of \r\n these situations, for instance, is Hajj or Umrah \r\n (i.e. pilgrimage to Makkah), where men are given \r\n the provision and encouraged to leave their arms exposed \r\n during the Tawaf, to express a sense of strength, \r\n and to make the arduous act of pilgrimage itself easy.
\r\n
 
\r\n
We \r\n should remember, just as women are obligated to wear \r\n looser and decent clothes, so are men supposed to. Therefore, \r\n it is improper and immoral for men to wear tight jeans \r\n and tight T-shirts, as is the fashion in our society \r\n today. Our dignity, as Muslims, lies in our intellect, \r\n our contribution to society, our behavior, and our message, not \r\n in what we look like and how well we can \"fit in\". Why \r\n should we blindly follow what everybody else is doing \r\n in the society? It is interesting to note today Muslim \r\n youth love the latest fashion and fad because they would \r\n like to be 'unique' and to create their own 'individuality'. \r\n But it is quite ironic at the same time, because \r\n if we ALL are supposed to be following the latest vogue \r\n that everyone else in the society is adopting, then \r\n what makes you and I a 'unique individual'?

\r\n
That's \r\n why those of us who run after the trends of this world \r\n their whole life, or at least in their youth, realize \r\n after a while, how useless and hollow their lives have \r\n become- a life of enslavement to the purposeless society, \r\n rather than obedience to God. We realize after \r\n a while that it isn't about 'individuality' or uniqueness, \r\n in fact it is about globalization and corporations-- \r\n the fact that these multi-national and multi-millionaire \r\n businesses and governments of the world, want the masses \r\n to keep themselves busy in their own little fantasy \r\n worlds of passions and fashions, while they themselves \r\n are utilizing their time and efforts quite 'productively' \r\n in bombing the children of Iraq and starving the Mujahideen \r\n of Afghan to death- a reality very few of the youth \r\n today realize!]

It is a valid practice, the approval of \r\n which could be found in some Hadiths, as well as in \r\n the writings of several Islamic scholars \r\n of the past and present, including Imam Abu Hamid \r\n al-Ghazali and more. Please refer to Shk. Yusuf Al-Qaradawi's \r\n \"The Lawful and the Prohibited in Islam\", on \r\n this issue, in the on-line library of www.youngmuslims.ca.
