Overcoming Your Hesitation to Help
\r\nYou may suspect abuse is happening to a neighbour, \r\n friend or family member, but do not know what to do\r\n or how to talk about it. You may worry about making\r\n the situation worse, or be concerned about what to\r\n do. Here are some concerns \r\n you may have about whether \r\n you should help:
\r\n\r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\nPoints of Concern | Points to Consider |
---|---|
You feel it's none of\r\n your business | It could be a matter of life or death. Violence is\r\n everyone's business |
You don't know\r\n what to say | Saying you care and are concerned is a good\r\n start |
You might make things\r\n worse | Doing nothing could\r\n make things worse |
It's not serious\r\n enough to involve\r\n the police | Police are trained to\r\n respond and utilize\r\n other resources |
You are afraid his\r\n violence will turn to you or your family | Speak to her alone. Let\r\n the police know if you\r\n receive threats |
You think she doesn't \r\n really want to leave\r\n because she keeps\r\n coming back | She may not have \r\n had the support she\r\n needed |
You are afraid\r\n she will become\r\n angry with you | Maybe, but she will\r\n know you care |
You feel that both\r\n partners are your\r\n friends | One friend is being\r\n abused and lives in\r\n fear |
You believe that if she\r\n wanted help, she\r\n would ask for it | She may be too\r\n afraid and ashamed\r\n to ask for help |
You think it is a\r\n private matter | It isn't when someone\r\n is being hurt |
